Ubuntu deserves a shot

Ubuntu here I come!
I always worked with Windows, don’t ask me why, I just grew up with it. A few years ago I had a very brief Linux experience, but about 2 years ago I worked about 8 months with Gentoo. Gentoo is a great distro, and it was very popular at that time (I still run it on my P200!). I needed Windows too for school, so I had a dual boot system set up.
BUT! When I returned to gentoo after a few weeks and updated my system it was suddenly fubarred. I went back to windows, and somehow I needed some diskspace and I deleted my gentoo (it was broken anyway and I didn’t feel like fixing it).
Yesterday I bought a 200 GB HD (Maxtor if you’d care), which means I can throw out Windows again and get back to Linux. I have a portable computer that runs Windows XP, so there is really no need whatsoever to run Windows anymore. I am now sorting my data (to make sure I don’t lose anything) and later on I’m going to give Ubuntu a shot. I was going to try Archlinux first, but I was told that Ubuntu is a real pleasure to work with so I’ll give it a go.

Ubuntu is nice. I’ve got it few weeks ago, but my main OS is Mandrake, I think it’s easy to use and I accustomed fo last two years. Now I’m testing Solaris 10.

What about Mandrake and Suse? Did you try those too? I have Mandrake 9.2running in dual, and i can’t say i’m sad having it installed.
But of course, that’s not really a comment, since i never tried Gentoo nor Ubuntu
I’ll get a supp. HD soon, good reason to give Ubuntu a shot. Let us know how it goes!

I run Gentoo, myself, but I gave Ubuntu a shot a while back… and it honestly is a damn good distro. My only complaint is that I didn’t care for the “enhancements” they made to GNOME. (They put all the basic icons into a menu and the Trash onto the panel.) Then again, I only played with it for a few days. Blog your “impressions” when you get a chance. I might have to give it another shot. Or maybe this Arch Linux distro…

I hear Archlinux beats gentoo. I’m running Gentoo on my server and ran it on my desktop and it’s really cool, but the compiling is overrated. It doesn’t change that much. Archlinux is like gentoo for installing stuff, only it’s already compiled (and optimized).

Yes, my flag is Polish one.
My tests on Solaris 10 are ended. I can say: it’s stupid OS! Don’t install it! Why Sun did something so slow and unstandarded? Brrr…
