Proken uptime record

Tuesday 15 March 2005 om 10u33

Gentoo

As you do or do not know, “Proken” is the name of my linux-server. It’s hardly a server, it’s a Pentium Pro 200MHz I got for free a few months ago. I put Gentoo on it (I know, what a choice…) but it runs ok and I’m not planning on reinstalling. It does what it has to do, run some screened irssi’s for me and my friends, it has an ftpd running and some other handy tools (cvs server, …).

Now that I run linux on my desktop I use Proken less (although I use the screened irssi daily). Anyway, long story short, look at my uptime!

jesus@proken jesus $ uptime
00:21:37 up 98 days, 4:23, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
jesus@proken jesus $ uname -a
Linux proken 2.6.9-gentoo-r6 #2 Tue Nov 30 15:43:12 CET 2004 i686 Pentium Pro GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Yes indeed, only 1 day and 19,5 hours left and Proken will reach the magic 100 days uptime. I’m such a geek.

[update]

10:30:01 up 98 days, 14:32, 3 users, load average: 0.06, 0.08, 0.02

[/update]

[update2]

16:13:04 up 99 days, 20:15, 2 users, load average: 0.01, 0.01, 0.0

Only 4 more hours!
[/update2]

[update3]

18:46:20 up 99 days, 22:48, 2 users, load average: 0.03, 0.01, 0.00

Come on! You can do it!

What a geeky post today. ;) I don’t know on servers, I only know I have the one at home, but there’s very old Mandrake 9.1 installed (before it there was Solaris, because it’s Sun computer) and it’s time to upgrade. I’m thinking which distro it should be.

@gdzilla: Hehe, I got an old UPS (for freeeeeee) so powerfailures are not a problem :D

@Prz: I can recommend Ubuntu, it’s Debian based and has Gnome integrated. The install takes a few minutes and you’re all set to go, you will have everything that you need.

eWeek claims in one of its recent articles that the Gentoo Linux is one of the faster growing distros.

I think about Ubuntu. It’s nice distro. On this server I don’t use www, mail etc. There are only running emule non-stop ;) There is also my /home and there is shared printer and hard disks - nothing special, so it Ubuntu looks good.

It depends what you mean with “server”. If you want to run X Ubuntu is ok, but if you don’t want to have X you can install debian (very stable), archlinux (great package manager, kinda like gentoo without all the compiling).

    1. “much” is without the “t”
    2. Linux doesn’t fuck

Seriously, why is BSD better? I heard a lot of good about it, and I think gentoo got the portage system from BSD too. I might give that a shot but I’m waiting for someone to convince me :)

Hmm… Lot’s of crap on that site.
    1. FreeBSD is better because it uses UFS and Linux uses ext2 -> I never used ext2 and I never will. Does UFS outperform Reiser4? I doubt it
    2. FreeBSD isn’t opensource :’(, Linux is :)

I might try OpenBSD though… Thanks for sharing.

    1. The site is a bit ‘free bsd minded’. The most important argument is the fact that linux is instable. It’s the kernel of our good friend Linus T. and everyone can put modules, things in and around it. When I look to the Linux Kernel code (2.6), the architecture is not so clear as it should be. Linux needs a clean up operation, because otherwise there will be (serious) conflicts in the future.

When I look at the source code of FreeBSD (look for point 2), it ’s very transparant and clear. It’s not one mess of gnu stuff and modules like the linuxcrap. FreeBSD is the future when linux doesn ‘t change his vision. writing a kernel module for FreeBSD has it’s own place en is much better structured.

    2. FreeBSD is ofcourse opensource. You can download the source at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors.html.

Note : My English is crap

jo dude, stop being a freebsd fanboy. I’ve used both for quite an extensive time and they both have advantages and disadvantages. Let everyone choose his OS, ’cause that’s what it’s about: CHOICE.

Much anger, I sense. What has this Linus done to you, young padawan?

Linux is much better than you make it sound.

Hij werd al eerder vermeld op dit blog, hier toen hij de eerste keer 100 dagen uptime behaalde, hier de elektriciteitspanne die na 102 dagen een reboot forceerde, en hier toen hij de 200 dagen kaap bereikte.
