U ooit afgevraagd waar al de plastic naartoe gaat?

Except for the small amount that’s been incinerated - and it’s a very small amount - every bit of plastic ever made still exists.
Naar ‘t schijnt is er een stuk oceaan dat door velen “Eastern Garbage Patch” genoemd wordt waar alle plastic ooit gemaakt verzameld wordt. Door een combinatie van wind en stromingen blijft al het vuil daar hangen, en plastic vergaat niet. Een oppervlakte zo groot als twee maal de oppervlakte van Texas, vol drijvende plastic. Zo ver als ge kunt zien.
The material’s molecular structure resists biodegradation. Plastic crumbles into ever-tinier fragments as it’s exposed to sunlight and the elements. And none of these untold gazillions of fragments is disappearing anytime soon: Even when plastic is broken down to a single molecule, it remains too tough for biodegradation.
En nog veel erger, minuscule deeltjes in het water, zo groot als plankton (onzichtbaar dus). In een beetje zeewater zat zes maal zoveel plastic (en andere toxines) als plankton. En we krijgen het allemaal op de één of andere manier binnen.
Ongelooflijk.
